Akfen Environment and Water Investment, Construction, Operation Co. (Akfen Water) was founded in June 2005 to develop concession projects in the Turkish water industry.

Akfen Su is a joint venture of Akfen Holding and Kardan N.V. Kardan N.V. is an international investment company based in the Netherlands, listed on Euronext Amsterdam Stock Exchange. Focused on emerging markets mostly within Central and Eastern Europe and China, Kardan is primarily active in three sectors: real estate, financial services and infrastructure.

Akfen Water’s primary mission is to recover the large economic losses in Turkey’s current water and infrastructure sector and to provide uninterrupted, reliable and healthy water and infrastructure services for the people. Akfen Water also aims to ensure the sustainability of this situation by developing new technologies and to gain strength in the global market with these technologies.

Setting its priorities in drinking and potable water and waste water projects, Akfen Water was established with the following objectives:

The appropriate distribution of all kinds of drinking and potable water obtained from underground and aboveground sources and the research, design, construction, repair, maintenance and operation needed for all related systems and facilities.

The collection of all kinds of household and industrial waste water, solid waste and rain water, diverting these wastes away from residential areas, the research, design, construction, repair, maintenance and operation of all related systems and facilities.

Akfen Water Projects

Güllük Municipality Drinking Water and Waste Water Concession Project

In August 2006 Akfen Water won the tender for the Güllük Municipality Water and Waste Water Concession Project located in the Aegean Region. The project was assigned to Akfen Güllük Çevre ve Su Yatırım Yapım İşletme A.Ş.  (Akfen Water Güllük) for a term of 35 years all the investment of the project has been completed fully by shareholders without any third party loan. Akfen Water Güllük currently serves over 5.000 subscribers that reaches a population of 3.700 during winter months and 20.000 during summer months.

 

Akfen Water Güllük Project is the first and only concession agreement approved by the Council of State in water distribution and wastewater network operations of a Municipality. With Güllük project Akfen Water has set the benchmark for water concessions and has played a leadership role in the emergence of water concessions sector in Turkey.

Dilovası Organized Industrial Zone Waste Water BOT Project

Task-Arbiogaz Dilovası Atıksu Arıtma Tesisi Yapım ve İşletim A.Ş. (Akfen Water Dilovasi) was established on July 2007 to construct and operate the Wastewater Treatment Facility of Dilovası Organized Industrial Zone. In Augut 2007 Akfen Water Dilovası won the 29 year period Built Operate and Transfer (BOT) tender of the Dilovası Organized Industrial Zone Waste Water Treatment Project. The project consist of construction and operation of Waste Water Treatment Facility with a capacity of 21,144 m3/day, a Mud Drying Facility and Waste Water Collection channels. The construction phase of the project is finalized in the first quarter of 2010 and the facility started its operations on April 2010. With this project Akfen Water serves the factories of Dilovası Organized Industrial Zone (OIZ) and approximately 30.000 habitants of Dilovası town.

With 822 hectare area and 196 factories (year 2009 figure), Dilovası OIZ is one of the biggest OIZ’s of Turkey. There are 260 OIZ’s in Turkey and Akfen Dilovası project is a prototype project. As is the case for Municipality Concessions, Akfen Water is the first company serving an OIZ with long operational period BOT model.

 

Kars Municipality Drinking Water and Waste Water Concession Project

Akfen Water won the tender for the Kars Municipality Water and Waste Water Concession Project located in the Eastern Anatolian Region. The concession contract will take effect after approval of the Council of State and the Ministry of the Interior.
