Destination Izmir promotion and business development platform was formed as a cooperative project between TAV Izmir, SunExpress, hotel owners and tourism operators of Çeşme and Izmir and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality as well as Çeşme and Alaçatı Municipalities. Destination Izmir aims to transform Izmir and its surrounding region into a global tourism brand and raise the voice of Izmir, the pearl of the Aegean and Çeşme. Within this scope, TAV Izmir takes part in many trade fairs worldwide and contributes to the promotion of Izmir as well as Turkey.
The photographs in the book Türkiye from 1000 feet authored by Alp Alper, a Turkish Airlines flight specialist, were displayed at the Atatürk Airport International Terminal. Among the bird’s eye view photos taken by Alper that photograph Turkey as seen from the point of view of the mythological Olympian gods are Yassıca Islands, Kekova (Caravola), Lake Küçükçekmece, Sümela Monastery, Atatürk Dam, Halfeti, Lake Meke, Hagia Sophia and Mount Ararat.
MIP has been the largest sponsor in the growth and development of the Mersin İdman Yurdu Club, Mersin’s only professional football team.
MIP has provided financial support to the Hatice Uludağ Elementary School Football Team to ensure its participation in the regional tournaments. In addition, the football tournament organized on the occasion of the 163rd anniversary of the establishment of the Police Department was made possible by MIP’s contribution to the event.
MIP sponsored the Mersin Offshore Races that were organized by the Mersin Chamber of Trade and Industry and the Istanbul Offshore Club.
Established in 1998 in Ankara, the Turkish Foundation for Waste Reduction is undertaking efforts to prevent waste and reduce poverty in Turkey. In addition to its food banking operations geared toward people on the hunger borderline, the Foundation works in cooperation with the 2006 Nobel Prize Winner Professor Muhammed Yunus to draw underprivileged women into production and create sources of income through Turkey Grameen Micro Loans Program. Akfen sponsored the micro-loan project as a contribution to its promotion.
The Micro-loans program was initiated for the first time in Diyarbakır on July 18, 2003. The program is being successfully implemented in the provinces of Diyarbakır, Mardin, Batman, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Adana, Ankara, Çankırı, Yozgat, Zonguldak, Amasya, Eskişehir, Kayseri, Niğde, Bursa, Aydın, Erzincan, Sivas and Rize. In addition, micro-greenhouse projects that use the non-earth cultivation techniques were initiated in these provinces. Akfen provides the financing for the micro-loan project in Kayseri.
Hamdi Akın is a member of the Akyurt Foundation Board of Trustees. Established in 1999, the Foundation’s objective is to meet the physical, psychological, social and cultural needs of senior citizens who are unable to take care of themselves.
TAV Airports Holding is among the entities that provided support for the restoration of the new headquarters building of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Art (İKSV), Deniz Palas, located on Tepebaşı Refik Saydam Street, which commenced service in December 2008.
The seven-story building, occupying a total area of 4,300 square meters, has a concert hall, a restaurant and outdoor terrace, a foyer café and a shop/café.
Mercure Hotel, which is managed by Akfen Holding, has assumed a one-year commitment to sponsor four family homes in the SOS Children’s Village that was established in Cyprus to benefit orphans.
Akfen has made one of the largest donations to the Campaign to Support Heroes Fighting Terrorism, an initiative that was launched by the TV channel Habertürk on October 19, 2007. In addition, MIP, an Akfen subsidiary, has provided the Mothers of Veterans and Fallen Heroes Solidarity Association with the office supplies needed for their activities.
In an effort to contribute to the formation of a common culture on the basis of universal principles in the business world, Akfen Holding signed the United Nations Global Compact on July 2, 2002.
The Global Compact requires participating companies to work in close cooperation with the United Nations by establishing ten principles regarding the issues of human rights, labor standards, the environment and anti-corruption.
Principle 1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2. make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Principle 3. Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
Principle 4. the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
Principle 5. the effective abolition of child labor; and
Principle 6. the elimination of discrimination with respect to employment and occupation.
Principle 7. Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8. undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and Principle 9. encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all of its forms, including extortion and bribery.
TÜSİAD (Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association) established an Overseas Communication Commission to execute the communication and promotion activities geared towards the public opinions in the European countries and an Overseas Communication Fund to finance these activities. Akfen Holding signed a sponsorship agreement for this fund for the period between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2012.
Akfen Holding made a donation to the Turkish Democracy Foundation on April 13, 2009.
